Well, I've boiled it down to the 4 fundamentals that you need to fix to be highly profitable on Amazon.
Traffic (top 20 rank)
There are 3 flavors of traffic. Ads, Organic/SEO and External. To be highly profitable, you must be ranked in the top-20 organically for your main keywords – because that's where about 70% of sales happen. If not, you'll be too reliant on Ads for traffic, and you'll never be profitable. Simply put!
Conversion
Conversion rate is the % of page visitors that buy. Your job is to squeeze every last penny out of every dollar that you spend on a click. Without a fully-optimized conversion rate, you're bleeding money every day, and you'll never be highly profitable.
Strategy
First of all, do you have a clear strategy? If not get clear. For example, you must know this: are you optimizing for sales/rank/marketshare? Or for profitability/sweet spot? This should be custom for every product.
